The WHO has approved the first vaccine that can help prevent malaria. Every year more than 4 lakh people die due to malaria. Africa is the most affected by malaria, especially African children. This vaccine is effective against Plasmodium falciparum, one of the deadliest among the 5 types.

Complex life cycle of the malaria parasite and response by the human body to that is also complex, so it’s very difficult to develop a vaccine.

Developed by the British drug maker, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), the vaccine, Mosquirix, is to be administered in four doses in children. The first three doses are given from the age of 5 months to 17 months and the fourth dose is administered 18 months later for the reduction of malaria disease and burden.

Malaria symptoms

Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite. People with malaria often experience fever, chills, and flu-like illness.

मलेरिया देणाऱ्या परजीवींचे जीवनचक्र किचकट आहे; शिवाय मलेरियाची लागण झाल्यानंतर शरीराकडून मिळणारा प्रतिसाद आकलन होण्यासाठी गुंतागुंतीचा आहे; त्यामुळे प्रयत्नांना यश येत नव्हते.

‘ग्लॅक्सोस्मिथक्लाइन’ने ‘मॉस्क्विरिक्स'(GSK) या नावाने विकसित केलेली ही लस आहे २ वर्षांपर्यंतच्या मुलांना या लसीचे ४ डोस देण्यात येणार आहेत.

मलेरियाची लक्षणेताप येणे, डोके दुखी आणि मांसपेशी दुखणे, थंडी वाजणे, ताप आणि घाम येणे आदी लक्षणे मलेरिया आजाराची लक्षणे आहेत.
