NASA Lucy Mission: First Spacecraft to study Jupiter’s Trojan asteroids

Lucy will be the first space mission to study the Trojans. The mission takes its name from the fossilized human ancestor (called “Lucy” by her discoverers) whose skeleton provided unique insight into humanity’s evolution. The Lucy spacecraft will be launched on October 16, 2021. The study of Jupiter’s Trojan asteroids will help scientists to understand how the Solar System and its planets were formed approximately 4.5 billion years ago and why they end up in the current sequence.

NASA’s Juno spacecraft has been orbiting Jupiter since 2016 but the Lucy spacecraft will be the first expedition by NASA to study the Trojan asteroids that orbit the Sun in two swarms, one leading ahead of Jupiter and other trailing behind the planet.

ट्रोजन लघुग्रहाचा अभ्यास करणारी लुसी ही नासाची पहिली अंतराळ मोहीम असेल. या मिशनचे नाव जीवाश्म मानवी पूर्वज (शोधकर्त्यांनी “लुसी” दिलेले नाव) ज्याच्या सांगाड्याने मानवजातीच्या उत्क्रांतिबद्दल अद्वितीय माहिती मिळाली त्यावरून घेतले आहे,. लुसी हे यान 16 ऑक्टोबर 2021 रोजी प्रक्षेपित केले जाईल. ज्युपिटरच्या ट्रोजन लघुग्रहांच्या अभ्यासामुळे शास्त्रज्ञांना हे समजण्यास मदत होईल की सुमारे 4.5 अब्ज वर्षांपूर्वी सूर्यमाला आणि त्याचे ग्रह कसे तयार झाले आणि ते सध्याच्या क्रमाने का आहेत.

नासाचे जुनो अवकाशयान 2016 पासून गुरूला प्रदक्षिणा घालत आहे. परंतु लुसी हे अंतराळ यान सूर्याभोवती फिरणार्‍या ट्रोजन लघुग्रहांचा अभ्यास करण्यासाठी नासाची पहिली मोहीम असेल, एक लघुग्रह गुरूच्या पुढे आणि दुसरा ग्रह मागे.
